US citizens can apply for a visitor visa that allows multiple entries over a four-year period. This visa allows you to stay for up to six months in each 12-month period. This doesn’t need to be all in one go – you can stay in New Zealand for a few months, leave for a while and then come back for another period later that year, as long as you aren’t staying more than six months in total in any 12-month period. The same Visa is available to citizens of the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and many European countries.
Eligibility for this visa is based on a points system which takes into account income, education, and time spent working in New Zealand. If you work in an occupation on the “green list” of jobs in high demand, you may be able to gain residence immediately or after two years in the role.
